Soul Understated featuring Mavis “Swan” Poole is an exciting new “neo-soul/funk” group that melds elements of R&B, Jazz, Funk and Hip-Hop into a unique sound. Led by vocalist extraordinaire Mavis “Swan” Poole (Lauryn Hill, Prince), whose distinctive vocal sound recalls Erykah Badu and Esther Phillips, and drummer Jeremy “Bean” Clemons (who has performed with Gregory Porter, Burning Spear, Jennifer Holliday and more), Soul Understated delivers a beautifully performed organic sound with stellar musicianship. “Swan" has appeared in the HBO television series Vinyl. Songs In The Key Of Grease, an E.P. featuring six original compositions, is Soul Understated’s first nationally distributed release. The material ranges from the infectious funk of “Wibble Wobble” to the slinky Badu-esque neo-soul of “The Way I See” to the beautiful balladry of “Fantasy.”

Songs In The Key of Grease

There will be a temptation to view Songs in the Key of Grease, the new EP by the group Soul Understated that is led by vocalist Mavis “Swan” Poole and drummer Jeremy “Bean” Clemons, as another in a line of retro albums released in recent months that range from solid to excellent. And I’m sure that Poole and Clemons would not stringently object to that characterization.

'Songs in the Key of Grease' has already secured 'album of the week' in September's Nu Skool Soul show on Blue-in-Green:RADIO and not only serves as a great introduction to Poole and Clemons' musical union but hopefully also as the first of many releases under the 'Soul Understated' banner.

Mavis Poole’s vocals sound similar to Erykah Badu, but on the track “1 Monkey,” Poole’s vocals go where Badu’s have never been. That’s not a knock on Badu, but high praise to Poole. Go Girl! “Junkie” tells the compelling story of someone who has a very difficult time getting their life back on track. The line, “We don’t want your kind here,” displays society’s contempt for a person on the path of self-destruction. On “So What,” Clemons’ drumming and the hand claps is straight up jazzy, ‘90s era soul. This is perhaps the best of the six tracks on the EP.
